THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM
“The ’59 Sound”- No Idea- CD
Huh, this band, they’re from New Jersey. I wonder if they’ve ever heard of Bruce Springsteen. I would have to assume they have. And not because they’re connected by way of the Garden State, or that I’d be hard pressed to find somebody who hasn’t heard of the Boss and there’s also the fact that the Gaslight Anthem seems to have found a way to bottle the essence of Springsteen and sprinkle it over each of their songs.
Frontman Brian Fallon has a bit of the Boss in his vocals, though no as gruff.
Musically the group is incredibly solid, especially for only having been together for 2 and-a-half years. If you don’t give it too much thought The ’59 Sound is a good melodic punk album. It’s a bit Bouncing Souls and a bit early Against Me! and definitely a good bit of Bad Religion; but, it doesn’t stop there.
There’s a real, hefty chunk of soul here. All of the words coming out of Fallon’s mouth and every beat of the drums and strum of the guitars sound deliberate and wholly inspired.
This is a CD for fans of rock ‘n’ roll. It’s something for fans of good music. For anyone who needs an anthem or if you just need something to tap along to, this is it.
