Review: All Get Out- “S/T”

December 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

ALL GET OUT
“S/T”-EP- Favorite Gentleman

All Get Out is currently on tour with Manchester Orchestra, and I guess it’s a good pairing because the two bands sound very, very similar. All Get Out lacks a bit of the avant garde style of Manchester, but they make for it by having a bigger rock feel. There aren’t the subtle nuances that are really more production flare and instead just rock out. allgetout
Now, this is an EP, eight bucks for seven songs, which isn’t bad because they’re all pretty substantial and they fit together nicely. All together it doesn’t sound like the normal EP where it’s a band either struggling to find its sound or filling an awkward gap between full-lengths. This EP feels very complete and self-sufficient.
The standout track is definitely “Water and God,” which is really just a solid pop-punk song. There’s a synth heavy intro, simple verses and one of the catchiest choruses I’ve heard in a while. It’s the song that, after hearing it live made me want to go buy the album. It’s straightforward and meant to make you want to sing along.
The second song that, upon hearing it live, made me desire this album is “Wasting My Breath,” a some what slower tune than “Water and God.” It shows the other side of their musical versatility. It’s just as powerful as the former, but with a bit more overt Christian themes. Normally this is something that would turn me off. I can handle the references and allegories from bands like Manchester Orchestra and Brand New. Christianity makes good source material for songs, I mean, mythology has been a muse for many years. All Get Out seems to take things a little more serious, almost to a Relient K level (but not quite) but they’re so good that I can look past it and really just enjoy this album.
If the band is coming through your town you should buy the album from them, if not, you can buy it from iTunes (where it’s less than $7).
For more info on All Get Out check out the band’s MySpace.

Clinton’s Nomination Unconstitutional

December 4, 2008 · 2 Comments

From CNN
“Clinton’s nomination popular, but is it constitutional?”

“Article 1, Section 6 of the Constitution says the following: “No Senator or Representative shall, during the time for which he was elected, be appointed to any civil office under the authority of the United States, which shall have been created, or the emoluments whereof shall have been increased during such time.”

Translation: A lawmaker cannot fill a position if the salary for that position has been raised during that lawmaker’s term in office.”

To be honest, that makes complete sense and sounds fair to me. If Clinton had become president she probably would have picked Obama for some cabinet position just the same and the situation would be the same.
I’m not a supporter of Clinton being put in a cabinet position as it is. I think I talked about it a bit in this post .

Obama and Clinton smeared one another throughout their entire campaigns. Clinton refused to concede when hope was but a faint glimmer in the distance. Now they’re one big happy family with, Clinton especially, nothing but the nicest things to say about their former opponent. Where’s the loyalty, not only to the people to supported Obama over Clinton, but where is Obama’s loyalty to the things he said during the campaign? How are we supposed to believe anything else Obama has said if he can go ahead and take back all the criticism of Clinton? I’m not so sure the “change” we all heard so much about is going to be the kind we want.

Though, admittedly, the shortsightedness of our forefathers might save Clinton due to the that little piece of the constitution specifying “he”. And I’m assuming Clinton will go the route of taking the pay cut anyways…so I guess I’m more still just angry but all the backtalk.

U.S. Gives Terrorists a Deadline to Work With

December 2, 2008 · Leave a Comment

From CNN “

Biological terror attack likely by 2013, panel says”

“WASHINGTON (CNN) — Terrorists are likely to use a weapon of mass destruction somewhere in the world in the next five years, a blue-ribbon panel assembled by Congress has concluded.”

The reasons why I dislike the government of my country and my chosen profession of journalism.

Follow Us In Case of Deadly Invisible Airborne Pathogens

Follow Us In Case of Deadly Invisible Airborne Pathogens

All this is is fear mongering and probably doing more harm than good. First off, it’s incredibly vague. Second: If no one was planning a bio-terror attack before, now they are and they’ve got motivation and a deadline to work with. Nobody likes not being able to live up to what’s expected of them.

And the pressure is being put on one region in particular:

“While observing that Pakistan is a U.S. ally, the report said, “the next terrorist attack against the United States is likely to originate from within the Federally Administered Tribal Areas” in Pakistan. The tribal areas lie in northwest Pakistan where the government exerts little control; the United States says it is a haven for militants from both Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan.”

Hey guys, no big deal if you can’t pull it off, it’s not like anybody is expecting you to do something. The rest of the terrorists won’t think any less of you.

Well, the Mayans predict it’s game over in 2012. The embarrassment if they’re wrong won’t be too long lasting since we’ll most assuredly all be dead in 2013 anyways.

Making Candy Canes

December 1, 2008 · 3 Comments

We in the Brosmer family have a long tradition going back almost 100 years now. It began with a candy shop owned by the great-great grandparents in Columbus, Ohio. The art of candy making, all from scratch and specifically candy canes, has been passed down, now to my grandfather, Bill Brosmer, and the day after Thanksgiving marks the kick-off to candy cane season for our family. I headed out to West Virginia with my parents this past Friday to help get things going.

For a more complete story, click here for a story I wrote in the Free Lance-Star a little while back.

These big “kick-off” events are kind of something new that my grandparents started hosting the last few years. It’s still kind of strange for me because I’m not familiar with much of anybody in my extended family past my grandparents. We used to just go, usually my brother, our dad and me and maybe a couple cousins would show up, but never the big affair it’s become.

I plan on getting back out at least once more during the season to help out a bit more, though it is a bit of a long haul. My grandpa only plans on being in charge of it all for 2 more years, up until the 100th anniversary in 2010, then all of the equipment, and the task of carrying on the tradition, is to be passed on to the next family member. The problem I’m encountering is that my dad apparently doesn’t want it, but I would like to inherit it all one day. Also, my brother Michael and I are the only Brosmer boys left. My dad only has a sister, and all of their cousins had daughters.

I think I’ve mentioned before how I want to leave behind a legacy of some sort, I want my children, some of the few who will be carrying on the Brosmer name, to be proud of that name and for it to stand for something, and this tradition is a big part of that.

Explanation for the lack of posting

December 1, 2008 · Leave a Comment

So, I haven’t posted in what’s going on about a month now. And surprisingly enough, it’s not because of my usual eventual apathy towards blogging. The reason goes back to why I started this blog in the first place. It was a school assignment and I was using the blog, my last two posts in particular, as part of my final project. The project involved tracking the progress of a couple of Richmond.com features as I “pushed” them out over the web. I present the project this Wednesday, and after I do I’ll post the whole thing here for anyone who cares. Personally, it was kind of a big disappointment, but I learned a good amount.

Regular posting to resume immediately! New fiction coming soon as well!
