So I built this table

January 28, 2009 · 1 Comment

I was talking to my brother today about how I go to this coffee shop, Crossroads, just about every day of the week, and I can get a lot more work done there than in my bedroom and It doesn’t matter whether I have my computer there with me. It’s not about distraction I figured. So then I figured it must be the whole sitting up at a table thing. So I went to Lowe’s and bought some wood and put together a little three-legged folding table. The goal behind it was to have a writing surface to set at the edge of my bed and be able to sit up in bed and write and do homework and the such. I put each leg on hinges so they fold inward. I need to buy some longer screws to putĀ  support brace across the front two legs and I might look for some sort of catch that will keep them in place instead of the legs falling open when I go to pick it up. I also plan on painting it.

I’ll post again once I finish it (hopefully tomorrow). My original want was to find some sort of plastic cup that I could screw to the underside of the table and the legs would fit into said cups and I could just take them out and store it away and then put them in again when I wanted to use it, but I think I’m happier with the hinges. Also, I bought some casters, but I dunno…I might return those. I don’t have a big need for them and it’s at such a perfect height that if I added casters it would be too high and I’d have to saw down the legs and I’m really not that motivated.

The first song is up on our new MySpace page over at www.MySpace.com/BornAgainHC

It’s a mixed down, but not mastered, but I think it came out quite all right.

Recording

January 18, 2009 · Leave a Comment

The band went into the recording studio today, basically all day, noon till 8 p.m. We did it in this guys’ living room, but it was a rather professional set up. Our bad is called Born Again, by the way and we play metal/hardcore. We don’t have a MySpace or anything…but will once we get these tracks back in mixed form. It went really well, and after the tracks (we recorded 4) get mixed they’re getting sent off to the Blasting Room to be mastered. The place is owned by Bill Stevenson, best known as the drummer for Descendents and ALL. The tracks sounded great even before mixing, so I can’t wait to hear the m after the full process. We’re going to be getting 7″ vinyl and CDs pressed and they’ll be available at shows and online for real cheap, like $3 for vinyl, $4 for a CD or $5 for both.

Review: Manchester Orchestra- “Let My Pride be What’s Left Behind” ep/dvd

MANCHESTER ORCHESTRA
“Let My Pride Be What’s Left Behind”-Canvas Back/Favorite Gentlemen-EP/DVD

I’m a pretty big fan on Manchester Orchestra’s first full-length, “I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child” and they’ve been working on a follow-up that’s due out early this year, but the band closed out 2008 with the release of “Let My Pride be What’s Left Behind” and it is one of the best packages around. Now, there have always been songs I might skip over on “I’m Like a Virgin…” because, while I can listen and enjoy the whole album the whole way through, there are some songs that are just better than others and sometimes it depends on what mood I’m in. With “Let My Pride…” Manchester Orchestra took one of those songs I might skip, “Sleeper 1979″ and made it my favorite track on the album with the live acoustic version they have on this EP.
The only other old song on this EP is an acoustic live version of “Wolves At Night” from the last album. Alongside those two tracks are three brand new ones that are a bit of a step in a new direction for the band, somewhat more mellow for the most part, but full of the emotion that keeps me coming back to this band.
The DVD includes a documentary, 3 live performances and 3 music videos. I’m not a big fan of band documentaries, but this one has enough live footage to keep things interesting. The music videos are nothing special. They’re all kind of the same idea and look like art student projects.
The three live performances are very, very good. Probably the most worth while part of the DVD. They’re mostly solo performances with vocalist/guitarist Andy Hull doing a few of the bands most heartfelt songs (including the new track “Badges and Badges) and the emotion really packs a punch. I think you can see somebody in the crowd crying at the end of “Sleeper 1979.”
For $11.99 (only at independent record stores) this is definitely worth every penny. Check it out.

Wow, January is flying by

January 10, 2009 · 1 Comment

Ok, so I think since my last post I’ve turned 21, celebrated Christmas and the New Year, bought a fluid indoor cycling trainer, started going back to the gym (no a resolution, the VCU gym is jut closed for part of winter) I read a few really good books (the best presents I got) and I finished the first season of Jericho and I’m almost through the third season of The Office (Netflix instant is awesome) and I bought 5 CDs today using a gift card for Plan 9 records I got for my birthday. And I restarted my game on Pokemon pearl.

More on all of this later.
And maybe some new fiction.

Thanks!
Ryan
