Man Alive

It’s been a pretty long day, despite it being a holiday and having no class or work, today still managed to keep pace with the rest of my busy schedule.  I left Williamsburg just before 9 a.m., go home 45 minutes later, relaxed, got things organized, then I went for a 25 mile bike ride.  I took it kind of slow, but it felt good.  I need to find more places to ride around here.  I could go for longer, but I don’t know where to go.  I hit my stride just around the time my ride is ending.

After that I came home to the new roommate and his parents moving things in. That resulted in me having to rearrange everything.  He seems very dependent, that even at 23 he’s just leaving home for the first time (that isn’t the case though).  His mom seems over protective, and IS over bearing, I experienced that myself.  He couldn’t figure out where to put anythng with out asking me first.  I think it might be his first place outside of a dorm room, so he seemed to be udner the impression that things might be furnished for him.  He asked me if he should bring a lamp.  He asked ME if he should bring a lamp for HIS room. Not in a, “hey, is there a light?” kind of way, but more “Hey..there isn’t a light..do you expect me to bring my own?”  He’s not rude, don’t get me wrong there, he just seems a little…lost.

So there I am, still in my cycling gear, emptying out cabinets and the refrigerator so he can shove his bulk packs of macaroni and popcorn in.

I managed to get away and run to the bike shop with James and grab some sushi for lunch. We hung out for a bit before I went home and showered and tried to take a nap.  I was tired, but couldn’t get to sleep.  I ended up gettig out of bed a bit later and going grocery shopping.  It was fairly successful, though carrying $50 of groceries on your back can get heavy.  But oh well, it’s better than driving.

I’ve spent this evening doing homework and preapring food for lunch for the next couple of days.  And while I’m metioning the homework, there are going to be posts on here for one of my classes, Mass Comm. 491: Learning with Digital Media.  I always knew one of my classes was going to involve blogging, and well, here it is.  They’ll be clearly marked if you want to skip over them, but I’m going to try and make them as interesting as possible.  The topics are things I’m genuinely interested in so they shouldn’t be much different than normal posts, just less whining I guess.

Here’s a song I’ve been fixated on.

Austin Lucas- “Pigeon Father”

I’m working all weekend, I need to get paid

August 29, 2008 · 1 Comment

I went through today on having gotten only 1 1/2 hours of sleep last night.  It went surprisingly well. I was moving a little slow all day, but I wasn’t tired. One cup of coffee in the morning at work and I was fine. My shift went by fast considering it was pretty slow. The wet weather, even though it was done raining, seemed to keep most people away. The only customers that came in were regulars.  One of our favorite regulars, Larry, brought me a bottle of wine from his recent trip to the wine country of Charlottesville.  It comes from Horton Vineyards and is really quite good. I had been in the mood for wine for a few weeks now, since Florida. I blame all the Hemingway I read in the lat few weeks of summer.  If there’s one thing Hemingway’s writing does for me is makes me want to be there, and wine is always a part of being there in his stories.

I spent a lot of time at work this morning working on a short story.  I’m taking a pause from working on it further right now to make this post.

After the bakery I headed right to Richmond.com, and I was only there from 11-3, but it was the busiest I had ever been there. I did a “10 Questions” interview with the director of my school’s wellness center about some grant they received for drug and alcohol abuse prevention. It was a 15 minute interview and it took me a good hour to transcribe.  I’m usually able to get people to answer the questions for me over e-mail so I just have to copy it over and edit it down, but despite the time it took I’m glad this one was a real conversation. She had a lot of interesting things to say about drinking education and the possible lowering of the drinking age.  I’ll post a link to the story here when it runs on Monday.

We were apparently having a garden party today at Richmond.com for one of our writers who was leaving. The party was at 4 and I went home around 3 and planned to take a nap. I set my alarm for 4 to wake me up and I was going to decide if i wanted to go back for the party. I ended up sleeping through the alarm and woke up sometime around 7 p.m.

I think I’m going into work early tomorrow, at 6 instead of 6:30. I’m heading to Williamsburg right after I get off and I’ll be back Monday.  I might update some over the weekend. Or I might just set up some auto updates to put some new reviews or something if I can get them working.
